Are you the type of person who swears that black can’t mix with brown or that your bag must match your shoes? Break that habit. You no longer need to worry about those formal style rules. Rich camel browns that are light enough (to create color contrast) pair gorgeously with black and other neutrals (remember my fall black dress/brown boots look as an example?).

Want the style created for you? Try two-tone shoes. They’re popping up everywhere so they’re forcing you to embrace the new style feet first! I couldn’t resist the heeled pair below from Target earlier this the week; I’ve worn them twice in four days! They go with absolutely everything, they’re so cute (I don’t think the picture does them justice) and truth: the comfiest! Great support with the straps around the ankle and the heel is not too high. If shoes are not for you, add a camel brown belt to a black dress or with black slacks and a colorful top (I suggest fun stripes or florals for summer!).

Here’s a few two- (or three!)-tone shoe options: flat, wedge and heel!

Flat: Zara two-tone sandal ($49.95) // Wedge: Sam Edelman Sophie // Heel: Target’s Merona Edith ($24.99, also comes in black)

Ah, the illustrious friends and family sale! I love to hit up Bloomingdale’s for their F&F sale (most recently scoring the MK tote in this post) and now F&F just went to a new level: Shopbop! Access discounts on brands/designers often excluded from promotions. Want a few ideas? Keeping under $200 per item, here’s exactly what I’d add to my cart because they’re brands I’ve adored — hello Joie, Equipment and Parker! — yet this average gal typically can’t afford the price tag. Today only (Wednesday, April 18, 2012) use code INTHEFAMILY20 for 20 percent off!  Husband: you listening (My payday is Friday; talk about poor planning… and I’m the boss!}

Prices listed are pre-discount:  parker lapel wrap dress ($198; color, flattering silhouette, racerback, sold!) /equipment silk blouse ($198; word has it these are insane! It’s on my total dream list) / joie cover-up ($98; in four patterns) /splendid tee maxi dress ($138; talk about a staple! Change up with belts, jewels, shoes) /  j. brand mid-rise skinny in lilac ($170; gorgeous color, perfect pair of jeans) / Jules Smith alex bracelet ($85; glam up any look!) / marc by marc jacobs aviators in burgandy opal ($110, also in black; I’m due for new shades) / rebecca minkoff mini mac clutch ($195, comes in multiple colors/fabrics; I have in black… it’s the best, especially at this price point)  /

And, three pairs of shoes to make it through the summer:

sam edelman t strap sandal in citrine ($65; the go-to summer sandal in a fun color and killer price point)/ soludus in ikat ($42; I didn’t get a pair last year and now I know why: this pattern now exists! Currently in my cart) /  sam edelman yelena ($140; obsessing after seeing these on Grace’s blog and Instagram feed. Pair with pants, dresses, etc.)
