outfit

Every time around this time of year every Florida girl (and probably add in at least Texas and California girl) are craving fall attire, despite temperatures rarely dipping below 80 degrees. Sad reality.  Two ways to inject a little fall: 1.. find pieces with touches of leather (err, well faux leather in this case). From dresses to blouses, it just adds edge. I picked up this dress in late August and am just getting to it. 2. Check out your footwear. Booties, particularly open toed with a fun pop of polish showing, is another great tip to have fun for fall, and they’re awesome with dresses, skirts and skinny ankle length denim and pants (definitely work appropriate).

Did you know most women are guilty of the same: wearing just 20% of her closet? I’m definitely guilty. It’s so easy to know what works, to stick to the tried and true, yet have been trying to mix it up. I have weeks where each day I’ll wear an item I haven’t worn in months; it’s a helpful way to see why I haven’t been wearing it. Poor fit? Don’t love the colors against your skin tone? How does it wear throughout the day (i.e. does it ride up or get tight)? Or, wow, where has this been hiding? It’s a fun little game because I’ve either rediscovered items, or feel way better about putting it in the donation pile at the end of the day.

For today’s outfits, Target suggested I remix one item in my closet I haven’t worn in at least six months. I picked a classic denim shirt (similar), which while I say I can never have too many, I realized this year that I’m actually not really a button-up blouse kind of girl and thus, have rarely worn mine (and truth: I own two).  While mine has been sitting idle, a denim shirt is really so functional, particularly as the weather starts to cool since it works so well as a layering tool. Here are three ways I played it up:

outfit: printed

printed shift dress // the average girl's guide

You know you’ve made a good clothing decision when you’re wearing the items inside the package one minute after opening it! Earlier this week, I had the girls over for a mani party (seen on Instagram; post on Monday) when I felt like nothing in my closet worked. Hate that feeling. My husband brought in the mail including a package from White Plum; I opened it and immediately took off my shirt — in the kitchen mind you! — and put on the new blouse (now sold out;  same style as this and more here) and now this dress is a new favorite….. the print, the fit, the ability to mix so many colors with shoes and accessories, and I can take it from work to weekend. I just wore this yesterday. I now desperately need more interesting blouses in my life — this girl has splurged on one too many sale t-shirts in the past.

After seeing bloggers style cute piece from White Plum I was eager to test it out, as I know many of us, myself included, can be hesitant to order from online boutiques new to us. I’m really impressed. The quality of the clothes was impressively good, particularly for the price point, and the shipping and service has been great. See pieces you love? White Plum is generously offering TAGG readers 20% discount; use code AVERAGEGIRL through 10/3.

outfit: floral and flouncy

September 18, 2014

floral print and flouncy skirt
While shopping for my NYC trip a few weeks ago I was on the hunt for a fun black skirt. I was searching for a more voluminous midi length option to pair with a crop top but this skirt from Ann Taylor was too good to pass up. The cut, the leather detailing, the fun flouncy style… it just worked, it’s universally flattering and I knew it would be a way more useful addition to my closet. Evidenced yesterday: in addition to being perfect for a night out, I wore this look to a local Chamber business networking breakfast. If you don’t have a great black skirt in your closet right now, I cannot say enough good things (though there’s tough competition: Ann Taylor’s collection is getting better by the minute, evidenced by this assortment!)

Now? Love. Big time. The duo-print is awesome, the fit is great and it’s different than anything I own (sound like question #3 from yesterday?). I am now seriously debating its navy floral print counterpart. Adorable, right? Pair that one with jeans for a casual cool dinner, and preferably fun heels or earrings with a pop of color to complement the prints.
