TAGG Talk: First Celeb Crush

March 20, 2013

There’s so many topics where it would be so fun to hear your responses, and others I’m confident we could learn a thing or two from each other if we started a dialogue.  So…. welcome to TAGG TALK! This one is ultra light-hearted but expect to see financial talk, tech talk, boy talk, and anything else talk. I’d love if you sent an email or left a comment below with a topic you’d love to create a dialogue around. My list is growing and want to add yours!

First (totally fun) topic: First Celebrity Boy Crush!

New-Kids-On-The-Block-the-90s-boy-bands-2565666-500-500 Do you remember yours? I’m sure I had a few little ones but the first major, major one was New Kid’s on the Block. Maybe this is not singular but I loved those guys when the y looked like this (though I’d kill to go to their reunion concert, it’s playing near me on my husband’s birthday). This crush might date me but man, I was such a nerd-out fan from about ’88-’91, so when I was about eight to 11 years old. They were my first concert, and my love of Danny, oh yeah, the bad boy, knew no bounds. I mean I adored Joey, who didn’t with that cutie baby face, but I just wanted to be Hangin’ Tough with Danny. I learned the moves to Step by Step — remember those?? — and had their faces splashed all over my walls thanks to those fold-out posters from Teen Beat and Tiger Beat. Those mags were my jam!

Embarrassing truth: we moved around a bunch when I was in 4-7th grade and I recall vividly my mom being so excited to score me an entire NKOTB bedding set… just as they were so NOT cool. I did an awesome job of hiding it from my new friends but somehow — and how lame that I still recall this moment — we were all with our bikes and passed the window of my room in the apartment complex and someone spied the bedding. There was no hiding it; the NKOTB guys were impressively large on that thing, and I was mor-ti-fied. It’s funny the memories that stick with you!  Even today, as a nearly 33-year old, I still call for a moment if their song surprises me on the radio or an old mixed CD my bro might have made for me (love you bro!) so I can full-out jam with my totally terrible voice. So good.

So you tell TAGG… what’s your first celebrity boy crush, and what’s a favorite memory you have?

I had a huge crush on fred savage from wonder years and was so excited to read about his bar mitzvah in tiger beat! I had a similar embarassing moment when my mom was so excited she scored me Debbie Gibson electric youth perfume just as Debbie wasn’t cool anymore…actually smelled decent and not nearly as hard to hide as bedding!

I loved me some Jonathan Brandis. Remember him from the movie Ladybugs and as Lucas on Seaquest? Sadly, he killed himself when I was in college. :(

I also liked Prince William when I was 12, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas from Home Improvement. I did have a Joe McIntyre doll, but I was a little too young for that to be a proper crush, although the reunion show 2 years ago was SO fun. You should go!

And I’ll be seeing NKOTB for the third time in my life this summer…Only one time was as a child. HA!

Mine was Joseph Gordon Levitt – long hair and all from his 3rd Rock From The Sun days. I’m giving my childhood self on the back for having excellent taste!

JTT was a close second. What the hell happened to him?!

I too had an obsession in those same years for nkotb :) saw them about 5 times back then. I loved jonathan, who tirned out to be gay, of course, along with my other love of the 80s george michael. My husband took me to see them for my birthday 5-6 years ago & I have to tell you donnie (my 2nd love) then took the top spot! Haaa! It was so fun to see them again & I wonder if my daughter will love my nkotb dolls someday as much as I did!
