I’ve wondered about laser hair removal for years. Is it painful? Do the results really last? How pricey is it? I mean, I just started waxing my eyebrows about two years ago (truth!). So when the generous folks at Body Details in South Florida offered laser hair removal on my under arms, I was hesitant but then realized this was a procedure so many other women wonder about and have the same reservations. So, consider me your ginuea pig who loves to ask questions! Clearly I’m not the only one curious, right?
I recently visited the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. location of Body Details – they have four locations, and perk, are open until 8 pm! — for my consult with Brittney and was so impressed. It’s as it should be: majorly spotless/hygenic and informative professional staff. I also loved the modern aesthetic and flat screens available to distract you during a procedure. All about the little things!
Since I’ve know completed my consult and first treatment, included below are questions anyone considering laser hair removal should ask and know. Stay tuned to the blog and our digital channels for the latest on the treatment results.
What’s the process here, and when can I anticipate results?
The goal is to cut off the blood supply; cauterizing the follicle so the hair comes out. To do so, the laser targets the darkness of the pigment inside the hair follicle. Following your first treatment, your second is scheduled about 6-8 weeks during your next growth cycle. Side note: am I the only one who thought appointments were every one or two weeks?
Anticipate a shedding phase (within two weeks of treatment), balding and then less and less new hair growth that should be more fine within about eight weeks, when you’re ready for your next appointment. Even with just one treatment, my hair growth is significantly lower during the shedding phase as hair is expelled from the body.
In terms of results, legs, Brazilian and armpits are faster whereas face is more hormonal. That’s where the value of a lifetime warranty comes into play! Especially for women considering pregnancy down the line, you want to plan that massive hormonal changes could cause hair growth; who wants to pay twice for that? Ask about this, and discuss exclusions (Body Details doesn’t have any).
Can I shave or wax after laser treatment?
Do not do anything the day after treatment – including wear deodorant (be prepared! This is because the hair follicle is open after treatment and you do not want to risk trapping bacteria or anything else). Going forward, you can shave and even Nair. It also helps to exfoliate with a loofah to remove the dead skin cells so that it’s easier for body to push out the hair. Just do not tweeze or wax!
Can you give me some basics that I should know before treatment?
Stay out of the sun for two weeks prior to your appointment (though you can wear sunscreen; do not lay out). Hair removal is all about pigmentation so the darker your skin from tanning the more challenges you create, however naturally darker skin tones can be treated (it’s just a different setting). You also want to avoid any antibiotics (apparently taking any close to your appointment can significantly increase pain level), and advise your location about any additional medications.
Let’s be honest here; what’s the pain factor with laser hair removal?
For the most part, Body Details compared the feeling to a cold squirt gun. Places with less fatty tissue such as your bikini line and under arms will be more sensitive than others. During my first treatment, it felt cold followed by a slight burning sensation; a few places “hurt” but not terribly and the pain was quickly fleeting. Luckily, the treatment is also less than 10 minutes for under arms – same for smaller sections like your upper lip – so the minor pain is totally worth an eventual lifetime of never having to shave again. Ever. Wait, never again? So good.
Tips: do not drink caffeine prior to the appointment, and avoid going before, during and after your period. To ease the pain, take three Advil about 45 minutes before treatment. Following treatment, my tech Sarah applied a hydrocortisone + aloe combo, which had a nice cooling effect.
Does laser hair removal work on everyone?
Almost everyone! There are a few exceptions. Body Details cited that the laser does not work on completely grey hair, vellis blond hair (that peach fuzz), and red hair with no brown pigment. {luckily mine does!}. It does work on darker skin tones since it uses a different setting on the laser; talk to your technician if you have any concerns.
What is the difference between an IPL and a laser?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is not a laser. While IPLs can be effective for some cosmetic skin procedures it is not for hair removal. A laser is a more powerful, safer option for hair removal. Don’t be shy about inquiring the device; there is a difference.
What is the cost for laser hair removal?
Body Details ranges from $995 for one item/feature to $2,695 to full face or nearly $8,000 to those who want full body. When TAGG commented about the higher than anticipated price they said it’s because every service is lifetime, and they are not a company that does coupons or groupon, or things of that nature. I respect that because they’re not giving away their product, and still run a successful business. Clearly their work has value! The price point enables them to stay current with the latest lasers and provide a good salary, i.e. attract good talent.
As it relates to staffing, I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. I would tell you if I wasn’t. Brittney, who is the office manager and led my consult is so knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. And, Sarah, the technician knows her stuff! I asked a million questions and they didn’t flinch or have to look anything up. That comfort level is key. If you walk into a place because it’s a “good deal,” be honest with yourself as you notice the surroundings and staff.
Disclosure: Body Details has provided TAGG complimentary laser hair removal, however all opinions are our own. We would never recommend a business that we wouldn’t patronize ourselves.
