How to Wear: Button-Front Shirt

January 24, 2012

Button-front, collared shirts used to be reserved for boardrooms, for formal occasions and for big meetings. Now, they’re designed in so many materials — from chambray to silk — and fun prints that they can be worn anytime. Instead of grabbing your tee or oversized sweater, add a collared, button-front shirt to your work day or weekend attire like you saw me in yesterday. Layer it with other materials and patterns for added visual interest… and keep cozy and chic (my official style).

It works every season, too….

Winter: old navy featuring chambray shirt (wardrobe all-star!) / Summer: forever 21 featuring striped silk blend shirt.

Love these ideas – I have been wearing TONS of button-downs this fall/winter because they are so easy to layer! :)

    • Alyson

They are perfect for layering! Since I live in Florida I don’t think about it as much — usually just go with a basic cardy however the options are endless.

Do you know who this post is SUPER AWESOME for? Ladies who left their office jobs and have a load of button downs they love but never wear and were just about to bag them up for Goodwill. Okay, that was awfully specific…I’m talking about me. I’ve got to be more flexible, I love this!

Somebody is brushing up their graphics skillz. Looking good!

    • Alyson

Ha, that does kind of sound awfully specific yet totally relevant to so many women! I wish I had more button downs… you should totally rock them more often. Just with a casual pair of boyfriend jeans?! Would love. And, thanks for the graphics comment… I’m working on it. :)

LOVE this post and I could NOT agree more. I love the ‘new’ casual button down and can’t help but reach for my more casual pieces on off days.

    • Alyson

You are such the amazing button down queen! Love how you so often rock your ‘camp’ shirts and whatnot! I’m totally reaching for these ‘professional’ items more frequently on casual days. Love.

Love a good button! Definitely so versatile. I’ve added so many button downs to my closet lately and they really are a great way to look good and still be comfortable.

You know, my go to tops never seem to be button down in the past, but lately I have been wearing much more of them. I agree, that with so many designs, patterns and fabrics to choose from you can be as casual or dressy as you like.

    P.S. You looked adorable yesterday!

    XOXO,
    Jamie

Great tips for the button up shirt! I have been all about layering right now. I think because I am finally in a place that is cold. I could never layer in Florida because I felt like I was burning up!

These are great ideas! I don’t wear button down shirts too much because I have a hard time finding ones that fit well, due to my bust being larger than the rest of me.

    • Alyson

I have the opposite problem! Ha. Have you tried going up a size and altering?

I’ve always loved the combo of a masculine denim shirt paired with a feminine skirt!

    • Alyson

Same… what a fun play on clothes.

Maybe I missed a post somewhere along here but I just had to stop by to say I am amazed by the quality of your blog recently. Since around the new year the content/quality/outfits/everything has just blown me away. Keep up whatever you are doing, because it is great! :)

    • Alyson

Melissa: Having a moment over here!! Can’t tell you how appreciative I am that you took the time to comment. Have really been working on enhancing the site (new camera, design update, etc) so love that you noticed. Thanks again! — Alyson

LOVED this post! I was never super into button downs until this summer. SO COMFY. I hardly layer them at all (too hot) but I realize there are so many combos! PS. Just bought that Pink Gap blazer…so cute!
